1986 Tour de France LeMond and Hinault Challenge! Greg LeMond wins a stunning victory over his team leader, French superstar and furious competitor Bernard Hinault, in a grueling race. Hinault, one of cycling's all-time greats, had expected to make this race his record-setting sixth Tour de France win. Most of France was thinking likewise. LeMond, magnificently, proved them wrong.
1989 Tour de France Those who saw it -- either from a vantage point on the Champs-Elysees or on television -- will never forget counting down the seconds as Laurent Fignon sprinted in vain to the finish line in the final time trial in Paris. LeMond had been at death's door after a shooting accident early in 1987 and was riding in his first Tour since winning in 1986. After an incredible three weeks that saw the maillot jaune switch between the American and Frenchman, LeMond trailed Fignon by 50 seconds overall going into the final time trial in Paris. No one gave him much chance of clawing back that time in just 24.5 kilometers, but the new triathlon-style handlebars were a distinct advantage as he beat Fignon by 58 seconds. After 3,285 kilometers of racing, a mere eight seconds separated the two men overall. It doesn't get better than that!
